December Events

December is probably the most exciting month of the year. It can be a most happy time at school and at home, if we plan ways to include the children in our preparations and celebration. During the Holiday season, structure and daily rituals are vital to the preschool child. Our own schedules are chock full of activities and often children get “lost” in our rush to prepare for the holidays. If a child’s routine remains the same, they will feel secure and grounded. It is challenging to implement structure at home when we are busy. Some of the best stabilizing traditions are little things that children can count on. Some examples are: family dinners, bedtime stories, or family game night.

Our routine at BUMNS will vary this week. The children will be busy practicing for our annual Holiday Show. The Holiday Show will be presented on Friday, December 15th at 9:30. The show rehearsal will be held on Thursday, December 14th at 9:30. Dana Sapp, BUMNS music teacher, will direct the children in a medley of Holiday songs. We encourage you to invite extended family to BUMNS Holiday show.

Thank you to families who donated clothing and toys to Berwyn United Methodist Church for their mission projects.

Registration for the 2017-2018 year is open to the public now. Encourage friends to visit our school.

If the weather is questionable, please check your email in the morning or call the T/E School Hotline, 610-240-1970. BUMNS will follow decisions made by T/E school district during inclement weather. If T/E is delayed for two hours, BUMNS will be delayed for one hour.

Important Dates:
Thursday, December 14th Holiday Show Rehearsal at 9:30
Friday, December 15th Holiday Show at 9:30….the Holiday Show will be professionally recorded. DVD’s of the show will be on sale. Class parties will follow after the show.
Tuesday, January 2 BUMNS will reopen

As we enter the season of Thanksgiving, I reflect on how thankful I am to have a wonderful family, friendships and a job I love. Gratitude affirms the good things in life. Teaching gratitude is a gift you can give your child that will ensure happiness. By learning gratitude children become sensitive to the feelings of others, develop empathy and other life skills. Research shows that there is a strong association between cultivating gratitude and greater happiness. When we are grateful, we are often healthier, more positive and more resilient.

BUMNS is supporting Berwyn United Methodist Church’s mission of helping those less fortunate. The school will be collecting donations of toys and gently used coats for the children of the Methodist Midtown Parish in Philadelphia. The 5 Day classes will be preparing “flood buckets” .The buckets will be filled with household necessities .The church sends the buckets to areas devastated by recent hurricanes. Both of these missions help to cultivate gratitude by serving and helping others.

Enjoy this Thanksgiving holiday by being grateful every day for the rewards life brings.

October

As BUMNS begins our second month of school, I have observed that the children have adjusted well to BUMNS preschool routines. I enjoy becoming acquainted with each child and their families. The children are becoming familiar with new routines and classmates. I am amazed how well the 2 Day children have acclimated to their new surroundings. You have done a terrific job reassuring your children that you will return at the end of the morning.

The children have been learning these skills and routines:
• recognizing classmate’s names
• taking turns and sharing with new friends
• transitioning from one activity to the next
• improving small motor skills using pencils, crayons, paint, glue and scissors
• taking care of belongings
• using quiet indoor voices and saving loud voices for outside
• cooperation in the classroom

Lunch n’ Play has been well attended this fall. The children enjoy socializing and outdoor recess on the playground. Please cut grapes and cherry tomatoes in half. Your child’s safety is our number one concern.

There is a teacher In-Service on Friday, October 13th. There will be no school. Parents are invited to join others at Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza in Wayne. After Pizza, wings or salad join families at Encke Park in Radnor. 20% of tracked dine-in and carry-out sales will be donated to BUMNS.

BUMNS is participating in the Square Art fundraiser. Your children’s’ art will be replicated on a variety of keepsakes. The keepsakes include; mugs, keychains, mousepads. Information packets will be sent home on Monday.

BUMNS is also partnering with A Casa Pizza during the month of October. Pizzas and Stromboli’s can be ordered from A Casa. Delivery will be on October 30th and 31st. The pizzas are perfect for an easy Halloween Eve dinner.

I am occasionally asked why fundraise at BUMNS? Fundraising helps distinguish our preschool from other schools in the area. Monies raised have built our playground, given us funds to add new educational tools to our Game Room and classes, installed a security system, painted classrooms, bought music instruments and KIM equipment. Fundraising helps support our school environment. Tuitions do not cover the full cost of education. Fundraisers help BUMNS offset the costs of providing a high-quality learning experience to children. Fundraising enhances a child’s early education experience.

Dads evening social will be held on Friday, October 20th from 7:00-10:00 PM at Devon Bowling Lanes. The cost is $30. Email the office for more information

Teacher Appreciaton Week

I am overwhelmed by the wonderful support shown for our staff during Teacher Appreciation week. I want to express my deepest appreciation to the parents for showering us with flowers, balloons, candy and meals! Reading the BUMNS Bear quotes written by parents, reminded me of why we all love our jobs at BUMNS.

Thank you for entrusting your child to us this year. Each child has brought joy and happiness to BUMNS. I feel blessed to have had such a wonderful group of children in our BUMNS family. The children have touched my life in positive and rewarding ways.
It has been a pleasure getting to know not only your child, but you as well. Having parental support and open lines of communication is an essential part of a successful school year. We appreciate our Game Room and Homeroom Parent volunteers. The wonderful success of this year’s Silent Auction is a direct result of the participation of our parents. I thank the BUMNS Parent/Teacher Board for the hours spent creating a wonderful evening for all.

It is hard to believe that we are approaching the end of another school year. I feel fortunate to have been a part of your child’s preschool experience. It has been an amazing privilege to witness the tremendous progress and growth the children have made since September. They are confident in their abilities and excited to learn more!
We say goodbye to those graduating to kindergarten. We hope the children leave with fond memories and will return to visit. I wish all families the best as you continue on this wonderful journey with your children.

The last day of school is on May 24th (3 Day) and May 25th (2,4 and 5 Day). We are looking forward to Camp Fun followed by summer vacation.

Motivating through Encouragement

November

It is hard to believe October flew by so quickly! The children had a fun month with lots of activities both in and out of the preschool. Field trips to pumpkin patches, apple picking and a walk to the Berwyn Fire Station were some of the fun learning experiences the children had. Play dates at Wilson Park and lunch at Mod Pizza were well attended. Thank you to the BUMNS Parent/ Board for planning socials. Thank you to the families for supporting our fundraisers. On Saturday, November 12th Dads are invited to the Berwyn Tavern for a Dad’s Happy Hour.

During the month of November the children will be talking about what it means to be thankful. Gratitude develops when young children engage in acts of kindness, whether it be sharing a toy or just being a good friend. By learning gratitude, children become sensitive to the feelings of others, develop empathy and other life skills.
Thanksgiving feasts will be celebrated by all classes. Turkey, cheese, and vegetables will be served. The children love this BUMNS tradition of sharing a meal together. Lessons will be taught about the first Thanksgiving Feast celebrated by the Native Americans and Pilgrims.

BUMNS is partnering with Berwyn United Methodist Church to support the church’s mission of helping those less fortunate. We are asking for toy donations costing $15 or less during November. The toys will be donated to the children of the Methodist Midtown Parish in Philadelphia.

Important Dates:

Saturday, November 12 Dads Happy Hour at the Berwyn Tavern at 4:00. Invitations have been sent home.

October Happenings

The children adjusted well to their teachers, new friends and BUMNS school routine during September. They are enjoying adventures to Music, KIM and of course, the playground. Game Room is buzzing with activity. The Game Room’s soft academic environment gives the children an introduction to pre-reading and pre-math concepts. Thank you to the Game Room…

February Thoughts

Much has been said lately about the power of play. The first thing noticed in BUMNS Game Room is the quiet hum of activity. The children are “playing” games. The children are focused and concentrating on the goal of completing the assigned “game”. Learning through play is not about children wandering without direction in a room full of toys or games. Learning through play takes a carefully prepared environment that allows young children to explore, examine, organize, manipulate, discriminate and make predictions.

In the BUMNS Game Room, learning is different for each child because each child is learning at his or her own pace. Games are assigned. Parquetry, story sequencing and manipulative games provide an opportunity for the child to learn about classifying, sorting, predicting and problem solving. Teachers note successfully completed tasks. The Game Room is fun for the children. The children are not just memorizing numbers and letters; they are learning and understanding the concepts of reading and math. The children are reasoning, hypothesizing, predicting outcomes and developing theories. But, most importantly the children are having fun! The benefits of play include gaining confidence as well as self-esteem, expanding language, understanding rules and sparking creativity. The goal is to give children a lifelong love of learning.

Friday, February 12 3 & 5 Day Valentine’s Day Parties

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year! I hope your holiday season was a time of relaxation and family fun. Thanks to your generous support, the hall ceilings and lighting were replaced during the winter holiday. The improved hallway is brighter and aesthetically pleasing!

• A recurring theme during January will be snow! There are wonderful books to read, and various mediums used to represent snow, snow people, and snowflakes! Painting snow people is a favorite art project.
• Lessons will be taught about Martin Luther King Jr .This gives us the opportunity to explore concepts such as kindness, peace, and acceptance of others.
• Registrations are being accepted for the 2015-2016 school year. There are openings in all classes. Families from outside the school have been registering for next year. Email the office if you have any questions.

January brings the challenges of buttons, zippers, hats, and mittens. Boots are not necessary. Help your child practice putting on their coat and zipping. The children will go outside for recess unless it is less than 35 degrees. BUMNS will follow T/E’s decision about school closure during inclement weather. Please call T/E’s hotline if there is a question about school closing or delays. The number is 610-240-1970.
