Welcome October!

The children adjusted well to their teachers, new friends and BUMNS school routine during September. They are enjoying adventures to Music, KIM and of course, the playground. Game Room is buzzing with activity. The Game Room’s soft academic environment gives the children an introduction to pre-reading and pre-math concepts. Thank you to the Game Room volunteers who assist teachers in the Game Room. There is a need for additional Game Room volunteers. If you are able to volunteer once a month please let the office know.
Our youngest 2’s are feeling secure and safe in school. Early tears have dried and the children have become accustomed their classrooms. As the year progresses, the 2’s will enjoy socializing that begins as parallel play.

October brings cooler weather, colorful leaves and exciting events at BUMNS. October is Fire Safety Awareness month. 5 Day classes will walk to the Berwyn Fire Station for a tour and a lesson on fire safety. The 3 & 4 Day children will have a visit from the Fire Company’s truck and firemen. The children learn that firefighters are helpful heroes. All classes will practice a fire drill at school.

Thank you for supporting BUMNS school fundraisers. The Rita’s Water Ice Celebrity Scoop was a huge success. Everyone enjoyed the warm sun and water ice. 15 % of the money spent at Rita’s on Wednesday will be donated to BUMNS. The Sports Day was fun for everyone!
BUMNS parents enjoyed an evening at AR Workshop in Malvern. 20% of proceeds from the evening at AR are being donated to BUMNS.

I am occasionally asked why fundraise at BUMNS? Fundraising helps distinguish our preschool from other schools in the area. Monies raised have built our playground, given us funds to add new educational tools to our Game Room and classes, installed a security system, painted classrooms, bought music instruments and KIM equipment. Fundraising helps support our school environment. Tuitions do not cover the full cost of education. Fundraisers help BUMNS offset the costs of providing a high-quality learning experience to children. Fundraising enhances a child’s early education experience.

May Farewell

It is hard to believe this is our last week of school at BUMNS. We thank you for entrusting your child to us this year. We have had another busy and successful year at BUMNS and you, as partners in the education of your children, deserve much of the credit for that. It has been an amazing privilege to witness the tremendous progress and growth the children have made since September. They are confident in their abilities and excited to learn more!

It has been a pleasure getting to know not only your child, but you as well. Having parental support and open lines of communication is an essential part of a successful school year. We appreciate our Game Room and Homeroom Parent volunteers. The wonderful success of this year’s Silent Auction is a direct result of the participation of our parents. I thank the BUMNS Parent/Teacher Board for the hours spent creating a wonderful evening for all. The monies raised will directly affect the children of our school. We are looking forward to buying KIM equipment, educational materials and new furnishings for the class rooms.
We say goodbye to those graduating to kindergarten.

We hope the children leave with fond memories and will return to visit. I wish all families the best as you continue on this wonderful journey with your children.

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!

“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who’ll decide where to go…” Dr. Seuss, Oh, The Places You’ll Go

On March 1st and 2nd the BUMNS children celebrated the birthday of Dr. Seuss. The children wore pajamas to school and were served donut holes and hot chocolate during snack time. Dr. Seuss holds a special place in the hearts of many because he wrote with the joy, concern and passion a child carries. The teachers honored Dr. Seuss by reading favorite books he wrote. Children love the rhyming, plots and art in his books. For many of us, our first introduction to literature was through the wonderful world of Dr. Seuss.

It is wonderful to see the joy on BUMNS children when they are having fun. It would also be wonderful to capture their innocence forever. In light of recent tragic news, it is important to let your preschooler know they are loved and safe. Fred Rogers often told this story about when he was a boy and would see scary things on the news: “My mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’ To this day, especially in times of disaster, I remember my mother’s words, and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers — so many caring people in this world.”

The 3, 4 & 5 Day children have been learning about our local community helpers. During the month of February the children donated pennies. $100 in pennies was collected. The money will be donated to the Easttown Police.

The 5 Day classes will celebrate their 100th day of school on Monday, March 5th. The children will count 100 objects, jump 100 times, and read 100 words. Pizza will be served.
On Wednesday, March 14th, the teachers will have an in-service day to prepare for conferences. Conferences are scheduled for Thursday, March 15th and Friday, March 16th. Parent-teacher conferences provide a means for communication between parents and teachers. Your child’s social/emotional, physical, and intellectual and language development has been evaluated by their teacher. The conference is designed to give you an insight into your child’s preschool progress. Sitting will be provided for children enrolled in BUMNS.

Acts of Kindness

Learning to be givers shapes children’s values and provides the opportunity to develop kindness. Children who learn to be caring and kind feel good about themselves. During the month of February and in conjunction with Martin Luther King Day and Valentine’s Day, the 4 & 5 children will participate in a “Kindness Catcher Project”. The project recognizes children who do random acts of kindness. Each kind act will be recorded on a heart and displayed on BUMNS hall bulletin board. Children learn from what they see. The goal of this project is reinforce being kind. The children will learn that no act of kindness is too small.

Teaching kindness begins with the youngest preschoolers. Practicing manners reminds children that a simple “thank you” can brighten someone’s day. Teaching children to recognize other people’s feelings introduces empathy. Teach children patience when they are frustrated. Patience goes hand in hand with kindness.

It is never too early to practice caring and kind behavior with children. Through these small gestures we can help make the world our children will inherit a little more kind.

Happy New Year! Welcome 2018!

Happy New Year! I hope your holiday season was a time of relaxation and family fun. Thanks to your generous support. A playhouse was added to our playground this fall with fundraising monies.

• A recurring theme during January will be snow! There are wonderful books to read, and various mediums used to represent snow, snow people, and snowflakes! Painting snow people is a favorite art project.
• Lessons will be taught about Martin Luther King Jr .This gives us the opportunity to explore concepts such as kindness, peace, and acceptance of others.
• Registrations are being accepted for the 2018-2019 school year. There are openings in all classes. Families from outside the school have been registering for next year. Email the office if you have any questions.

January brings the challenges of buttons, zippers, hats, and mittens. Boots are not necessary. Help your child practice putting on their coat and zipping. The children will go outside for recess unless it is less than 35 degrees. BUMNS will follow T/E’s decision about school closure during inclement weather. Please call T/E’s hotline if there is a question about school closing or delays. The number is 610-240-1970.

2016-2017 Welcome

Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year at Berwyn United Methodist Nursery School. I am looking forward to the busy and exciting year in store for us.
BUMNS strives to offer a quality, nurturing and productive learning environment for your preschooler. Your child will have the opportunity to learn and play with his/her peers in a variety of different ways. Each day will be filled with fun activities to help your child develop academically and socially. BUMNS has an outstanding support staff who works in different capacities to support your child’s early childhood experience.

Our school’s success is related to parent –teacher relationships. Parent involvement is encouraged at BUMNS. Parents can volunteer as homeroom parents, in the Game Room, as chaperones for field trips or help with school fundraisers. Throughout the year I will communicate with parents through notes, telephone calls and e-mails. I welcome e-mails, director@bumns.org or phone calls (610-296-2246) if you have concerns or questions.

BUMNS Parent/Teacher Board has planned many social activities for the children and parents throughout the year. The first family social was held on September 10th at 4:00 at Johnson Park in Berwyn. The event was well attended by both returning and new families. Future socials include Parent Coffees, Happy Hour at Main 30, and an all school play date at Wilson Park.
